JANUARY NEWSLETTER 2019
Another great month bringing in 11 winners, taking our tally to 30 for the season, one win off our total number of winners this time last year.
Wandrin Star was first past the post at Bangor at the beginning of the month and finished third in a competitive chase around Kempton on Boxing Day. He and Rocky's Treasure have continued the winning streak for owners John & Penny Perriss with Rocky's Treasure winning again at Doncaster finishing the year with nice looking form reading 11121.
Commodore Barry has delighted his syndicate owners with a double in December, the second of which provided a thrilling finish with him winning by a head.
Phil Andrews' winning streak has continued with the progressive Mr Grey Sky also completing a double in bumpers; it is not often a horse can win two bumpers as the penalty given on the first usually is to much but Mr Grey Sky again finished his race impressively.
We won two Grade 2's last month with Charbel and Vinndication.
Charbel winning the Peterborough Chase Huntingdon was brilliant as Kim has always wanted to win this race, a race with real history. He put up a stunning performance and it was a it was a hugely deserved win for David and Julie Martin’s gelding
Vinndication was brilliant winning the Noel Novice Chase at Kempton. Just for a moment we thought we might have a struggle on our hands when Jerrysback appeared to join us, but that was soon put to bed.
Best turned out winner Vinndication does not do impressive, more workman like, but who cares as long as he keeps winning. Six on the trot now and it's amazing to think that he won his bumper at Ludlow on November 7th 2017; he has come a long way in a very short time.
2018 was not a bad year for us here at Thorndale. It all started with Cresswell Legend winning on January 1st at Musselburgh and the month followed with First Flow winning the Grade 2 hurdle at Haydock on bottomless ground.
February saw Vinndication win the prestigious Sydney Banks Hurdle at Huntingdon and Red River the Trials Hurdle at Musselburgh. Sea Story and Two For Gold both won their second bumpers. Others won races and the last runner of the season Bandon Roc won at that far away racecourse that was Towcester.
After a summer break the horses returned healthy and happy and we were soon off the mark with Minella Warrior and then Commodore Barry, who then went on to win a further three making it four out of five for the year. Rocky's Treasure set Kelso alight and he too won a further three races. Dandy Dan broke Kelso’s track record for a 3 mile chase and Imperial Aura did the same over the 2 mile hurdle track at Carlisle.
Vinndication reappeared and now over fences won his novice at Carlisle and then went on to win at Ascot. Charbel who had a back operation during the summer, started his season in fine style winning a handicap at Chepstow off top weight and then went on to win the Peterbrough Chase at Huntingdon.
Wandrin Star showed how much he loved the Welsh track that is Bangor with two wide margin wins there and then the youngster started to appear. Newtide, Mr Grey Sky, Those Tiger Feet all horse who have won and with a very bright future.
So that was last year, now 2019 and so much to look forward to.
On that happy note, Happy New Year and as always, I will keep you posted on what we are up to and what is going on here at Thorndale.
This month we hear from long term racing enthusiasts John & Laura Garrett who are involved in several of our KBR Partnerships.
Going to Killarney Races with several hundred racegoers going towards the entrance, and a gentleman running towards us arms out stretched, grabbed my hand and pushed two tickets into it and ran off as quick as he came without a word being said. I thought I was being mugged! ........Read More
